The things leaders don’t say

We asked hundreds of leaders the one thing they wish they could tell someone on their team but haven’t. Their answers expose an honesty gap.

By The Ryan Leak Group

Most leaders are sitting on at least one sentence they have chosen not to say. Things like correction, feedback, gratitude, concern. When we asked hundreds of leaders at four organizations to share what they have left unsaid, the answers were as specific as they were personal. Each was something the leader had rehearsed and yet chosen to keep back, sometimes for years.

What stood out was how deliberate the silence was. Many of the leaders who responded stated the reason they held back, and those reasons fell into several recognizable patterns.

01

Professional restraint

Some treated the silence as part of the job, a matter of staying composed.

“This is a hard one. There are things I wish I could say but don’t, to remain professional.”
02

Fear of being misread

Others stayed quiet because they doubted the message would be interpreted the way they meant it.

“I wish we could communicate more openly about challenges without fear of judgment or misunderstanding… This is a result of fear of misinterpretation.”
03

The hedged conversation

Some had raised the issue already, but only in a softened form that never reached the real point. One leader had circled the same problem more than once and still pulled the punch.

“By letting your pride get in the way of asking for help, you are eroding trust within your team. We have discussed this theme, but I haven’t been this blunt.”

Thanks for making the trip.
